Vintage 50s Christian Dior New York Kimono Tube Cap Sleeves Blue Slubbed Silk Obi Waist Dress B34
Dior from the 1950’s is normally associated with the New Look, but Dior did at least three collections which featured this sleeve treatment; the first in 1949, then one in 1954 (in which the treatment was described as “tube sleeves”) and then one of the first Yves St. Laurent collections (maybe 1958).
This thoroughly modern look is from the Dior New York boutique which while not “couture” is amazing in its fashion forward look and construction and is a true collector’s item.
Constructed of slubbed blue silk with a gray undertone and lined in black sheer tissue silk the dress feature short kimono sleeves, a modified obi sash, wide neckline, slightly highwaist and back “fly away” panel. The back panel is stitched to the sash which wraps around and secures at the waist. The button front is just for accent, it does not open. The open kimono sleeves reveal a second interior bodice. Metal back zipper.
The dress is not without flaws. While the exterior is wearable and strong, the interior lining is fragile and split in a few spots. If you plan on buying this to wear the interior lining will need to be replaced. Because of the condition of the lining I have not had this dry cleaned which means there is a slight dark spot on the back right shoulder. Price reflects these flaws.
It is always best to measure an item that fits you well and compare. I measure from side to side and then double for bust, waist and hips (7 inches down from waistline). Bodice length and total length are from top of shoulder down. Please email me if you have any questions.
